Hotels in London continue to boast the highest occupancy rates in Europe, according to a survey published by Deloitte, meaning that if you are planning a trip to England’s capital in the near future you are best advised to book in advance rather than leave it to chance.

The November 2007 hotel benchmark survey revealed the occupancy rate for London hotels stood at 86.6 per cent for the year, and that good news for the city’s hoteliers was compounded by the revelations from Price Waterhouse Coopers that revenue available per room has risen 33 per cent in the last five years.

Using information from a sample of 3,500 hotels across Europe, the Deloitte benchmark survey is the most extensive performed outside North America. One of the most significant factors identified in the report is that because of the poor performance of the dollar during the year against European currencies, the average room rates were significantly higher than in the previous year. However, as the dollar has started to perform better in international money markets recently, room rates could reduce in real terms for US visitors during 2008.

Although the survey shows that London fills most of its hotel rooms it is not the most expensive city in Europe in which to stay; as that ‘honour’ belongs to Paris. The average room rate per night in London during 2007 was calculated at 1, three dollars lower than the average Parisian rate. The third most expensive place to stay in Europe during 2007 was Rome, with the average rate for rooms in the Italian capital recorded at a considerably cheaper 8 per night, slightly ahead of Amsterdam at 8 per night.

But, even though the prices quoted in the survey are the averages per night, as with all statistics they don’t tell the whole story. Just as are there are many exclusive five star hotels in London where prices can be much higher than the average rates there are also many that offer excellent value at around 9 per night for comfortable accommodation in the heart of the city.

If you are planning a trip it certainly pays to shop around and do your homework, rather than go for the first London hotel that has a vacancy. There are hundreds of quality hotels in London so there is plenty of choice, and you should be able to find the hotel that is ideal for you and your budget.

London, England is one of the most urbane, sophisticated cities on Earth. As such, it is a popular destination for tourists, but the prohibitive cost of many hotels is daunting and a turn-off to some. Before you cancel your plans to visit due to the expense of lodging, take some advice on finding a cheap hotel in London.

By turning to the place where everyone seems to find their information these days, the internet, you can find all kinds of advice on cheap hotels in London. Just type in “cheap London hotels” or something similar into a search engine and you will get more results back than you can shake a stick at. Don’t go with the first page you see and take all of your advice from it; look around. You will quickly gain enlightenment not only on hotel rates, but on quality as well. The websites that you find may offer advice from tourism bureaus or from private citizens. Take all of this information together, focusing on customer reviews. These reviewers have been through all of the trials and tribulations and have good information based on their experiences.

After you have procured the price for several hotels that might fit your needs, start heading to their websites and look for special deals they are offering. It goes without saying that you need to perform some comparison shopping while you are on these sites. Find out how far in advance each hotel will allow you to book a reservation because early bird deals are often the best. Some London hotels let you make a reservation over a year in advance. Customer reviews are again a valuable resource because they will help you separate the wheat from the chaff without wasted time.

As you search fast and furiously online for cheap London hotels, you might forget about the ever-valuable travel agency. Travel accommodations are what these establishments do for fun and profit, so they will have scads of information dealing with hotels in London. Along with the latest offerings they are able to procure for you, they can help you plan the whole vacation to London while you’re there. When you think about all of the time and effort they can save you, their fee suddenly may not seem so significant.

So forget about skipping a visit to London just because the hotels are too expensive. There are plenty of cheap rates to be found if you do some digging. Travel agencies also have plenty of advice on finding a cheap hotel in London.
